Round One at the WSOP

Friday, June 12th, 2009
The trip to Las Vegas every year for the WSOP is always filled with a bit of nervousness. This year would be no different for me! The time there would begin with many satellites and cash games and ultimately end with a possible repeat (or better) of my Ladies Event last year. Only time was able to tell what would eventually happen.I arrived in Sin City back on May 30th with the full intention of playing in the $1k “Stimulus Event”. To my horror, it was already maxed out at 6,000 players and not one way of getting in! Instead, I made my way to the Venetian for the $330 deep stack tourney. Never really got anything going even after doubling up on my second hand with A’s.
The next few days worth of tournaments would eventually end just as disappointing as the first day. The $2k event was almost identical in the fact that I got all-in with Q’s early and won, only to see my chips slowly disappear with 300 remaining.

The one event I had circled on my calendar was the Ladies Event that I’d hoped would finally be my coming out party. There were just over 1,000 ladies, which meant I’d have to wade through some tough tables. I felt confident going into the day’s play and it showed as I won the first three pots of the day. But, as the broken record went, I ended up with the short stack and had to make a move. Busto!

(A special thanks to BJ Nemeth for the beautiful photograph he captured of me.  Did you all know that BJ is especially handsome?  See his amazing Photo Blog  at http://tweet.pkrrd.com/nation/photos/posts/wsop-day-12-women-take-over-the-amazon-room-while-negreanu-nears-a-bracelet )

The one shinning spot of the trip would have to be the cash games. People! I shouldn’t have to tell too many of you who frequent the series, but for those who don’t…the cash games are very lucrative! Many times I would get to a table and manage to come out in the black. Time after time, I would be playing close to the vest and it would pay off.

The plan from here is to take some much needed time to relax and possibly plan another trip for the main event in the coming weeks. As of right now, I’m just too drained to make any decisions about what to do next. Except the decision to go lay down in my own bed and get some much needed sleep!
